Περίληψη

The purpose of this study is to investigate the production of the speech act of thanking by both native speakers and different proficiency levels second language (L2) learners of Greek. The data were elicited through role-plays. Participants had to perform in a series of situations that differed in the social parameters of power and distance. The results suggest that the Greek community in general use elaborate structures for thanking. Findings also seem to demonstrate that grammatical development and sociocultural knowledge affect the performance of learners which lags behind native speakers in some situations.
